Foods Which are Potentially Poisonous to Dogs
Owners need to be extra vigilant when dogs are around our food, some human food can be poisonous to a dog.
- Chocolate
Chocolate contains a heart stimulant called theobromine. Dogs are like to suffer serious problems if they eat chocolate or products containing it. So one that must definitely be avoided. Dog chocolate has been suitably modified so as not to cause any problems.
- Coffee Grounds/Beans and Tea
Can cause similar problems to those of eating chocolate, this isbecause of the caffine.
- Onions
Onions can damage the red blood cells which could cause anemia, again serious potential for harm to your dog. This applies to both raw and cooked onions as well as shallots.Your dog may be able to cope with very small amounts of onion but err on the side of caution. Garlic can have the same effect.
- Macadamia Nuts
Roasted or raw can cause muscle problems for your dog. These should be avoided.
- Grapes and Raisins
A dog can suffer kidney problems, even failure if these foods are eaten. Raisins more poisonous than grapes. There is no definitive answer as to how much is dangerous so the answer is do not let your dog eat any.
- Seeds and stones from apples, apricots, cherries, peaches and plums can poison your dog if enough are eaten. The fruits themselves are generally thought to be quite safe.
- Alcohol
I can not imagine why a dog could get alcohol but they can suffer from alcoholic poisoning.
- Fried Foods
Animal fat, fried and fatty foodsin general , too much fat can cause pancreatitis.
- Avocados: The fruit, leaves, stem and pit are all toxic, Persin (a fatty acid derivative). Swallowing the Avocado plant can cause beathing problems, heart failure, vomiting and diarrhea.
- Broccoli:
Small quantities of this are alright but serious problems if too much is eaten
- Salt
Large amounts of salt caus kidney problems. Salt should never be given to dogs to make them vomit.
- Tomatoes
Heart problems can be the result of eating tomatoes especially dangerous are the leaves and stems
- Yeast Dough/Bread Dough
When ingested the gas that is produced can cause problems with the stomach and intestines. Alcohol is also release which add to the difficulties.
- Hops, rhubarb leaves,raw eggs, raw fish, mushrooms and nutmeg are also know to cause problems if large amounts are eaten.
Other Household Dangers
Around the house there are many other non-food items that are obviously dangerous to dogs and should be kept well out of their way. Fertilizers, antifreeze, cleaning fluids, washing powder, mouse/rat poison, vitamins, some garden/house plants, moth balls as well as types of medication can all be extremely dangerous to pets.
If your dog shows any sign of illness,and you suspect they have eaten something they should not have, you must get to your Vet immediately.
