How to Train My Dog

I called out “Come” to get Ben back to me. Is he deaf I think, so I shout again, and again. Ben, my dalmatian, will come when Ben wants to come back.

Been there, done that. I had to find a way to get Ben back, so I started researching the internet. I found some information. Tried it out. No good. Went and found some more, tried that. Still failed. Ben got older and I kept calling and calling.

I read one sentence, it struck me. Don’t let him go far away and teach him what “Come” means.

I did. He came. A dog training technique that works.

Key Idea … Build a Relationship

How you train your dog has a lasting effect on the relationship between you and your dog. It’s a great feeling having your four-legged friend returning enthusiastically to you when called, sitting or heeling when asked, being quiet when told, going to the toilet when asked, entering his crate when told to ……. the list goes on.

People ask how can I train my puppy, can I potty train my puppy, can I train my dog to sit. Yes Yes Yes is the answer to these and many similar question. You can change the behaviour of any dog or puppy all you need are the correct techniques and a few tips an hints to help you. Many people use dog crate train to help a puppy settle into a new home or to toilet train.

You must be the Pack Leader

There are a few things you have to know to make training less complicated and more pleasing for you and your dog. The most vital thing you should always remember is that you are in charge and you decide what happens. It is not done by force, it is done because you take on the role of pack leader and exude confidence in that role. Dogs, by their very nature are pack animals and stick to a strict pecking order within the pack - you have to be “leader” of the pack.

Alpha Dog

To train my dog obedience, correctly and easily, I need to be the leader, act as the leader and once this is set and you become the leader in the eyes of your dog and he will follow your lead. Get this position right early on and your relationship develops in the correct way. All this can be done in your own home. Again I say, none of this is achieved by physical force it is achieved by your whole demeanour and how you act in what you do with your pack.

All dogs are different, some are more assertive than others, some are dominant, some very easy going but it does not matter we that your dog’s personality, you have to be the leader, speak as the leader and act as the leader. Your followers will obey your commands.

Danger … Don’t let your dog be leader!

If you allow your dog to take the leaders role, by saying things such as – it’s such a sweet little puppy and it funny when he does …. whatever he does – letting the puppy however sweet do what it wants gives him the advantage and he’s going to start to believe that he’s the leader. I repeat, I do not mean you need to be physically aggressive to your dog ,a long way from it. You want to show your leadership with your actions and when you say “sit” you know your dog will sit.

Your dog is different in many ways to a human, in how he interpret your commands and how he acts. Your dog is not much different to a two year old child in it’s mental ability.

Key idea … train every day!

The key word, when you are dog training, is be patient. Spend about forty five mins or a half hour each day to work on your training. You can take it in smaller time slots through the day if that suits better but keep doing it every day. You need to understand that every minute of every day you are really training, even if you don’t think you are. There are many different training techniques, clicker training is one that offers you an interesting way to work with your dog.

Never too young or old to Train

Start training your dog as soon as he arrives, he’s never too young and he’s never too old. I train my dog the basics first, the “sit” command is always a good starting point and we will show you how. Teaching your dog to come to you, and how to get your dog to lay down are the base for lots of other commands.

Key Idea … be consistent

Always use the same word for each command and say the word clearly. You praise and treat all the positives and never punish your dog if he fails to do as you wish. Frustrating at times, that’s true, but stick with it and it will get better.

It can be great fun and rewarding for both of you to continue learning new behaviours and little tricks as you take your training up a notch. Training your dog properly means that not just his safety and his wellbeing is ensured but he will enjoy his life in your household.
